Malaysia has announced the introduction of a digital nomad visa in a bid to become Southeast Asia’s next big hub for remote workers.

Together with the launch of the so-called ‘DE Rantau Nomad Pass’ for qualified foreigners, Malaysia has pledged to construct digital nomad communities. In addition, it is creating more remote work hubs across the country.

The new visa was unveiled by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), an initiative launched by the government to boost the country’s digital revolution and economy.

People earning over €24,000 per year will be eligible for the digital nomad visa in Malaysia. The visa costs MYR 1,000 (€221) and holders will benefit from exclusive offers from the country’s remote working hubs.

The regulations stipulate that those interested in the digital nomad visa must be a freelancer, independent contractor or a full-time remote employee within the digital sector. The main profession targeted is IT, such as software development, digital marketing and digital content creation.

In addition, applicants are required to show proof of employment, such as an active contract or several contracts of a minimum of three months. An active employment contract with a foreign business is also permitted.

Under the DE Rantau scheme, people are allowed to remain in Malaysia for between three and 12 months, and the visa can be renewed for a further 12 months.

Moreover, workers can bring their families with them at a cost of MYR 500 (€110) per person.

Under the current rules, remote workers from eligible countries, such as the U.S., UK and EU member states, can stay in Malaysia without a visa for 90 days. Applications for the 12 month DE Rantau Nomad Pass get underway on 1st October.
